10,000 JNTU-H engineering students detained

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad.
Hyderabad: This year nearly 10,000 students were detained by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTU-H) for not securing enough credits in the first year engineering examinations.
Students must secure a minimum of 24 credits out of 48 in order to get promoted to the second year. But about 10,000 failed to get the required credits and were not allowed to attend the second year classes.
In some private engineering colleges, close to 80 per cent of the first year students fell short of credits. Even in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district, barring some elite colleges, several of them were found failing to meet the mark.
A few reasons for students scoring poor credits, officials said, were rote learning in intermediate colleges, absence of quality faculty and low attendance. The university wants private engineering colleges to impart quality education. But dearth of quality faculty members seems to take a toll on the engineering education, they said.
“The problem is arising due of lack of quality faculty and even students are not interested in attending classes. When they do not attend classes, how will they learn concepts and as a result they fail,” said an official.
On the other hand, student organisations such as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) attributed the problem to involvement of inexperienced faculty members in evaluation. ABVP wanted the university to select experienced faculty and use their services only for paper evaluation. It also wanted it to consider pass percentage and percentage of students being detained every year during issuance of affiliation to colleges.
In order to arrest the situation, the university authorities had an interaction with about 70 college managements and asked them to give remedial classes, mock tests and take personal care of students. “Students should not take detention in a negative way but in a positive manner and learn concepts which will help them in the second year. This learning will also give them a good grip on the subject,” said Prof N Yadaiah, registrar of JNTU-H.

14 Things Every Guy Did In School Just To Impress A Girl

Remember how we used to hate school when we were young? And now, all we want to do is go back to that same place which gave us the best of memories.  The thing with school was that it got more interesting with every passing year. Yes, the pressure of academics increased but then, somewhere along our adolescent years, friendships became stronger, crushes started happening and the first flush of love entered our lives.  When girls started to apply a little  kajal and guys started to put gel in their hair, just to impress each other. Because now, school was more than just books and notebooks.  In fact, getting the guy or girl you crushed on to give you a second look was of utmost priority. Nothing else mattered, anything else was of no consequence. And yet, with all the multiple restrictions, we tried our best.  Especially boys who'd go out of their ways to impress a girl. Just to make her smile. Because  hasi toh fasi , right? Here are 15 things e...
