How many of you read, the statutory warnings (The stunts are performed by trained professionals, do not try this at home) that flash on screen while you watch a film?
Overcome by enthusiasm and an apparent trust in ‘superhuman’ abilities, some viewers selectively filter out such statutory warnings and forget the thin line between real and reel. A few year ago, there were cases where many children died imitating the 90s superhero Shaktimaan played by Mukesh Khanna.
Likewise, last week, a Mumbai-based businessman, Indrapal Patil lost his life while he was attempting to jump like ‘Baahubali’ Prabhas, at the waterfall over Mahuli Fort on July 14.
According to Mumbai Mirror, 27-year-old attempted the Shivudu jump from 'Baahubali: The Beginning', from the cascading Mahuli Fort waterfall. In the movie, Prabhas takes a leap across the waterfall opposing all laws of physics. Police also said that this was the second such incident in the waterfall.
In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Indrapal Patil's brother Mahendra expressed his grief, "We were informed by the police that my brother fell from a height and died. It was shocking for all of us, even more so for his wife. Patil had gone to Mahuli fort with his friends."
However, some eyewitnesses informed that the deceased jumped rather than fell from a height. An official from the Shahapur police station said, "Patil was trying to land on his feet missed and went underwater. His friends got him out of the water. It appears that these leaps are inspired by the jump in the movie Baahubali."
On the other hand, the family members, claim that this was no foolhardy stunt. Mahendra alleged, "My brother was pushed. It must have a thought attack, or someone might have accidentally or playfully pushed him."
